Cover for the people you love

Life insurance

Choose the right life insurance for you.

They all pay out if you die during the policy. The difference is how much, for how long, and to whom.

Who can apply? Most insurers cover people from 18, if you live in the UK. The top age depends on the insurer and how long you want the cover for. Over 50s plans are for people aged 50 to 80. Not sure? Ask us.

  • Level term

The same payout, whenever you claim during the term.

    Suits: Families, and interest-only mortgages

  • Decreasing term

The payout shrinks over time, and so does the price.

    Suits: A repayment mortgage

  • Joint life

One policy for two people, paying out once.

Suits: Couples sharing a mortgage or bills

  • Family income benefit

A monthly income until the end of the term, not a lump sum.

Suits: Young families on a budget

  • Whole of life

Cover for the rest of your life, so it always pays out.

Suits: Leaving an inheritance, or paying Inheritance Tax

  • Over 50s

A fixed payout, guaranteed acceptance and no health questions.

Suits: Funeral costs, from 50 to 80

What’s covered, and what isn’t.

The short version. Your policy documents have every detail, and we’ll go through them with you.

Usually covered

  • Death from illness or an accident during the term
  • A terminal illness, if you’re expected to live less than 12 months
  • Anywhere in the world, on most policies

Usually not covered

  • Death after the policy ends
  • Suicide in the first 12 months
  • Anything you didn’t tell the insurer when you applied
  • Dangerous activities the policy excludes

What’s covered depends on the policy and the insurer. We’ll show you the details before you decide.

How it works.

Three steps, online, with a person on the phone if you want one.

  1. Tell us about you.

Your age, your health and the cover you want. It takes a few minutes, online.

    Step 1
  2. Compare your quotes.

See the prices and the differences side by side, and choose the one that fits.

    Step 2
  3. Apply, and you’re covered.

The insurer checks your answers, sometimes with your doctor. Cover starts the day they accept you.

    Step 3

Life insurance questions.

Short answers to what people ask most, before they buy.

  • How much life insurance do I need?

Enough to clear what you’d leave behind, such as the mortgage and debts, plus enough to keep your family going for as long as they’d need help. We’ll help you work it out.

  • What affects the price?

Your age, your health and your family’s, whether you smoke or vape, how much cover you want and for how long, level or decreasing cover, and your job and hobbies. The younger and healthier you are when you start, the less it costs.

  • Is the payout taxed?

The payout isn’t subject to Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax. It can count towards your estate for Inheritance Tax, unless the policy is written in trust.

  • Do I need it if I rent, or don’t have children?

If nobody relies on your income and you’ve no debts to leave behind, you may not. If a partner shares the rent or bills, it’s worth a look.

  • Can I get cover with a health condition?

Often, yes. Many conditions are covered at a normal price; some cost more, or aren’t covered. Insurers see conditions differently, which is why comparing helps.

  • Can I have more than one policy?

Yes. Some people have one for the mortgage and another for the family, ending at different times.

  • What happens if I stop paying?

Your insurer usually gives you time to catch up. If the payments stop for good, the cover ends and nothing is paid back.

More answers

Already have a policy?

Claims and changes are handled by your insurer: their number is on your policy documents. If you arranged it through us, call us on 01302 590 852 and we’ll help you find the policy and the right people.

For a claim, it helps to have:

  • The policy number
  • A death certificate, or the doctor’s report for a terminal illness
  • The details of the executor or the trustees
  • Bank details for the payment

Claim through the insurer

Their claims number and online form are in the policy documents. Most claims start with one call, and they’ll guide you from there.
