In short

  • We only ask for what we need to find you the right cover, and to keep the records the law requires.
  • We share your details with insurers only to get you quotes and set up the policy you choose.
  • We never sell your information, and we never make sales calls.
  • Your health details are handled with extra care, and only with your consent.
  • You can ask to see, correct or delete your information at any time, for free.

Who we are

Croaked is a trading style of Believe Protect Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (number 13913093) at Believe House, Heavens Walk, Doncaster, DN4 5HZ. We decide how your information is used, so in data protection terms we are the “controller”. Our registration number with the Information Commissioner’s Office is [ICO number].

Believe Protect Ltd is an Appointed Representative of Believe Advisor Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA number 841395). Believe Advisor Limited oversees the advice we give, so it sees some of your information too (see who we share it with).

What we collect

To find you the right cover, we ask about you and the cover you want:

  • Who you are: your name, date of birth and sex, and the same for anyone you want to cover with you.
  • How to reach you: your address, email and phone number.
  • Your circumstances: your job, income, smoking status, and your mortgage or rent, where the cover is for them.
  • Your health: your height and weight, medical history and lifestyle, which insurers need to price the cover (see below).
  • The cover you choose: the policy, its amount and term, and who it pays out to.
  • Our conversations: your emails and messages, and our phone calls, which may be recorded.
  • Your visit to this site: your device, browser and the pages you view (see cookies).

Your health information

Details about your health are a “special category” of information, and the law protects them more closely. We only collect them when you give us your explicit consent, and only to arrange and look after your insurance, as the Data Protection Act 2018 allows.

You can withdraw your consent at any time. If you do, we can’t get you a quote or arrange cover that depends on it, but it won’t affect anything we did before.

Where we get it

Mostly from you, when you ask for a quote, speak to us or use this site. We may also get information from:

  • Anyone you ask us to cover with you, or who applies on your behalf.
  • Insurers, about the quotes and decisions they make on your application.
  • Your doctor, if an insurer asks for a medical report and you agree to it.
  • Fraud prevention agencies and public records, to confirm who you are.

If you give us details about someone else, please make sure they are happy for you to do so, and show them this notice.

How we use it, and why we’re allowed to

The law only lets us use your information when we have a reason it recognises. Here is each thing we do, and the reason.

Getting you quotes and arranging your policy
To take the steps you’ve asked for before a contract, and to carry it out. For health details, your explicit consent.
Advising you on which cover suits you
To carry out our agreement with you, and to meet the FCA’s rules on suitable advice.
Keeping records and answering to regulators
To meet our legal obligations, including the FCA’s record keeping rules.
Preventing fraud and checking who you are
Our legitimate interest, and the insurers’, in stopping fraud; sometimes a legal obligation.
Recording calls
Our legitimate interest in training our team, checking our advice and settling disagreements.
Improving this site
Your consent, for any cookies that aren’t essential.

Who we share it with

Only with the people who need it to do their part, and never to sell:

  • Insurers on our panel, to get you quotes and set up the policy you choose.
  • Believe Advisor Limited, which oversees our advice and checks our files.
  • The companies that run our systems for us, such as hosting, email and phone services, under contracts that keep your information safe.
  • Fraud prevention agencies, when an insurer or the law requires it.
  • Regulators, courts and the police, when the law requires us to.

Sending it outside the UK

Some of the services we use may store information outside the UK. When they do, we make sure it has the same protection it has here: either the country is approved by the UK government, or we use the contract terms the Information Commissioner approves.

How long we keep it

Only as long as we need it:

  • If you ask for a quote but don’t take a policy, for [12 months], in case you come back to us.
  • If you take out a policy, for as long as it runs and [6 years] after it ends, as our regulators require.
  • Call recordings, for [6 years].

After that, we delete it or make it anonymous, so it can no longer identify you.

Keeping it safe

Your information is encrypted when it travels to us and while it’s stored. Only the people who need it can see it, and they are trained to look after it. If something ever goes wrong that puts you at risk, we will tell you, and the Information Commissioner, straight away.

Your rights

Your information belongs to you. You can ask us to:

  • Show you what we hold about you, and send you a copy.
  • Correct anything that’s wrong or out of date.
  • Delete it, where we no longer have a good reason to keep it.
  • Stop or limit using it, while we look into a concern you’ve raised.
  • Send it to you, or to another company, in a format a computer can read.
  • Stop using it for anything we do on the basis of our legitimate interests.
  • Have a person review any decision made about you by a computer alone.

It’s free, and we will answer within one month. Email us at [Email address], call 01302 590 852 or write to us at Believe House, Heavens Walk, Doncaster, DN4 5HZ. We may ask you to prove who you are first, to keep your information safe.

Calls and marketing

We don’t make sales calls. We only contact you about the quote or policy you’ve asked us about, and we only send you news or offers if you’ve said yes. Every message has a way to stop them, or you can just tell us.

Cookies

This site uses cookies: small files that help it work and show us how it’s used. We only use the ones that aren’t essential if you agree. Our cookie policy explains each one, and how to change your choice.

If you’re unhappy

Please tell us first, and we’ll put it right if we can: email [Complaints email] or call 01302 590 852.

You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK’s data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.

Changes to this notice

When we change how we use your information, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects you, we’ll tell you before it happens.
