What you can add it to.

It isn’t a policy on its own. You add it to cover like this, usually when you apply.

  • Life insurance

Keep your family’s cover going while you can’t work.

  • Critical illness cover

Keep your cover for a serious illness in place.

  • Income protection

Stop paying premiums while the policy pays you.

  • Mortgage protection

Keep the cover on your home going.

Why it’s worth a look.

  • Your cover keeps going. If you can’t work, the policy you rely on doesn’t lapse for want of a payment.

  • It costs a little. It adds a little to your premium. We’ll show you the price with and without it.

  • One less bill. When money’s tight, the insurer picks up this one.

What’s covered, and what isn’t.

The short version. Your policy documents have every detail, and we’ll go through them with you.

Usually covered

  • Your premiums, if illness or injury stops you working
  • Payments after a waiting period, often several months
  • Until you go back to work, or the policy ends

Usually not covered

  • Your other bills: it only pays this policy’s premiums
  • Losing your job or being made redundant
  • Time off shorter than the waiting period
  • Anything you didn’t tell the insurer when you applied

What’s covered depends on the policy and the insurer. On a joint policy, check whose illness it covers.

How it works.

You add it once, and hope you never need it.

  1. Add it when you apply.

Tick the option when you get your quote. It’s usually easiest to add at the start.

    Step 1
  2. Carry on as normal.

Your premium includes a little extra for it. Nothing else changes.

    Step 2
  3. If you can’t work, tell the insurer.

After the waiting period, they pay your premiums until you’re back at work.

    Step 3

Waiver of premium questions.

Short answers to what people ask most.

  • Can I buy it on its own?

No. It’s an add-on to a policy, such as life insurance, critical illness cover or income protection.

  • Do I need it if I have income protection?

Maybe not. If your income protection would cover your premiums, you may not need it on your other policies. We’ll help you weigh it up.

  • How long is the waiting period?

It depends on the insurer, and it’s often several months. It’s in your policy documents.

  • Can I add it later?

Some insurers let you, but most expect you to choose it when you apply.

  • Is it the same as payment protection insurance?

No. It only pays the premiums on the policy it’s attached to, not your loans or other bills.
